Ultrastructural change in the parathyroid gland of the phosphate treated newt, Triturus pyrrhogaster (Boié).

چکیده
thyroid glands of the phosphate treated and hibernating (control) newts. The parenchymal cells of the newt parathyroid gland were classified into basal cells and suprabasal cells. Daily administration of phosphate caused no marked changes in the former cells. In the latter under experimental conditions, granular and agranular endoplasmic reticula and small dense granules seemed to be increased in number, while glycogen granules appeared decreased in number when contrasted to those in the control newts. The Golgi apparatus and large homogeneously dense bodies were increased in number reaching a maximum after 7 days of phosphate administration, and lipofuscin-like bodies were gradually increased in number during the experimental stages. On the contrary, vacuolar bodies were first rapidly, then gradually decreased in number. Large heterogeneously dense bodies subdivided into a vesicular type and lysosomal type were slightly decreased during 14 days' administration of phosphate and increased in number after 21 day administration. Under experimental conditions the vesicular type heterogeneously dense bodies were more dominant than the lysosomal type. The numbers of mitochondria were hardly varied as compared with control newts. From the above results it is conceivable that alterations in cell organelles and inclusion bodies indicate hyperfunction of the suprabasal cell caused by phosphate administration. However, mutual correlations of inclusion bodies remain incompletely clarified.

Are the parathyroid glands necessary to the life of the newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster?
In contrast to the diverse results of parathyroidectomy in anurans as to the appearance of neuromuscular symptom, effects of the removal of parathyroid glands in urodeles have been in agreement with each other. Scholz (1935) working with Salamandra, reported that his animals were kept in his laboratory up to 1 year after parathyroidectomy without any ill effect. Parathyroidectomy in Triton and ...
متن کاملSodefrin: a novel sex pheromone in a newt.
The abdominal gland in the male red-bellied newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, is the source of a female-attracting pheromone. An attempt was made to isolate and characterize the female-attracting pheromone in the abdominal glands of male newts. The active substance, named sodefrin (from the Japanese 'sodefuri' which means 'soliciting') has been isolated and shown to be a novel decapeptide with the seq...
متن کاملWave of Stiffness Propagating along the Surface of the Newt Egg during Cleavage
In the eggs of the newt, Cynops (Triturus) pyrrhogaster, change in stiffness of the cortex was measured in various regions at the time of the cleavage. Measurements were performed by Mitchison and Swann's cell elastimeter method with a modification, in which two fine pipettes were attached to the surface of one egg at the same time, in order to compare the rigidity of two regions. The stiffness...
متن کاملBeyond sodefrin: evidence for a multi-component pheromone system in the model newt Cynops pyrrhogaster (Salamandridae)
Sodefrin, a decapeptide isolated from the male dorsal gland of the Japanese fire belly newt Cynops pyrrhogaster, was the first peptide pheromone identified from a vertebrate. The fire belly salamander and sodefrin have become a model for sex pheromone investigation in aquatically courting salamanders ever since. Subsequent studies in other salamanders identified SPF protein courtship pheromones...
متن کاملChronic Exposure to Cadmium Disrupts the Adrenal Gland Activity of the Newt Triturus carnifex (Amphibia, Urodela)
We intended to verify the safety of the freshwater values established for cadmium by the European Community and the Italian Ministry of Health in drinking water (5 μg/L) and sewage waters (20 μg/L). Therefore, we chronically exposed the newt Triturus carnifex to 5 μg/L and 20 μg/L doses of cadmium, respectively, during 3 and 9 months and verified the effects on the adrenal gland. We evaluated t...
